Two plazas act as outdoor stages for everyday life in competition entry for Salt Lake City
While other blocks within the cultural district have a distinct role and character within the city, blocks 69 and 70 have the unique opportunity to rethink and redefine public connection spaces.
One plaza takes on a topography not unlike the surrounding area, while the other plaza uses a mirrored surface technology to reflect the ever present Utah sky.
Taking inspiration from the iconic geological formations that are spread throughout Utah, seating and stage spaces are carved out of the plaza in block 69 creating a landscape of intimate “stage” spaces that bring audience members closer to the performance. Experimental collaborations that encourage interactivity between artistic entities and audience members can take place against the backdrop of other simultaneous events and gatherings redefining plaza spaces as social condensers. The cavernous qualities of the plaza encourage smaller groups and create sheltered spaces for intimate get-togethers and improvised meetings. These formations are also spread throughout the alleyways which create a wide range of private areas juxtaposed against the wide space of the plaza.
